Melanoma: Did You Know? Jun:10

During National Sun Awareness Week (June 7 – 22nd), the Canadian Dermatology Association shared some important statistics and facts about melanoma:

  • Melanoma is now the 7th most frequent cancer in Canada, affecting 5,300 people in 2010 and causing 920 deaths.
  • It is a less common but the most serious form of skin cancer since it can spread in the body.
  • The survival rate is high: 90% of Canadians diagnosed with melanoma will survive. Early detection is very important as this is directly linked to the high survival rate.
  • Unlike many cancers, melanoma is clearly visible on the skin.
  • Excessive ultraviolet (UV) exposure from the sun and sunbeds plays a leading role in the development and is the most preventable cause of this disease.
  • It is most commonly found on the backs of men and on the legs of women.
  • Protect yourself by finding out your personal risk, checking your skin and knowing the early warning signs of melanoma: the ABCDEs, where A stands for asymmetry, B for border irregularity, C for colour variegation D for diameter greater than 6mm and E for evolving lesions.

If you are concerned about your risk or would like your moles and sun spots to be checked, be sure to book an appointment with Dr. Rivers at 604.682.7546.
