Sclerotherapy in the Summer? Jun:10
If you are interested in having some of your medium-sized veins and spider veins treated with sclerotherapy but are thinking that you will have to wait until summer has past, then think again.
There is no reason to delay having leg veins treated in the summer. Treatments are quick - often under 30 minutes – and the results are immediate. Aside from avoiding a vigorous workout, you will not be restricted from walking, biking or many of your other favorite summer activities. In fact, after the treatment you will be asked to immediately walk for ten or fifteen minutes. There is no need for time off work.
Most patients find the injections minimally uncomfortable—like a pin prick. Right after treatment, the doctor or nurse will place a bandage over the treated area, which may be removed within a few hours. There is a slight risk of bruising, so we recommend that you minimize your aspirin usage and alcohol consumption for one week prior to the procedure. For those who bruise easily, over the counter treatments such as Valerian have been recognized to help prevent bruising.
Many patients ask how the blood will get back to the heart after the veins have been closed by Sclerotherapy. It is interesting to note that 90% of our blood return is handled by the deep venous system, and only 10 % of the superficial veins handle the rest of the blood. If your veins are malfunctioning, the blood has already found other veins to circulate through—the treatments will not affect the circulation in your legs.
